I don't have cable. Don't care to. But I do buy a lot of TV on DVD. I like something that will suck me in and keep me there, something that will make me earn for more and dread when it is over. My history includes South Park, ALF, House, Seinfeld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I am currently wrapping up season 3 of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and cannot stand the thought of losing the connection I've made with the show, but it's almost time to move on, I've already experienced the wonder. I've made a few considerations, watching random episodes online. Desperate Housewives isn't for me, thought Nip/Tuck our be good but some of the characters were to over the top. My top contender as of now is 7th Heaven, but I have a few other considerations.
Medium, never seen it, heard it was great, apparently.
ER, I was big on that when I was younger, don't know if the how kept up.
Chuck - I know nothing about this show other than there is a guy in it, and theres 4 1/2 stars on Amazon.com
Six Feet Under - I watched some of the first season, it was pretty good.
The West Wing - I watched this when it was on TV but I don't know if it will stick with me now like it did back then.
The Riches - Description was interesting, know nothing other than the rating on Amazon.
The L Word - My roommate said this was good, but I don't know anything about it other than what the "L" stands for.
Soap - I know it's from the 70s (a much, simpler time, btw) and it was apparently controversial. I like my humor a bit jagged.
then there's Dead Like Me, Party of Five (why not? it's just a consideration, I'm desperate here!), Weeds (which I heard is absolutely hilarious), Early Edition (only because I was so curious about the show when it was on and never actually watched it), Roswell (good rating on Amazon, just don't want it to be to teeny booper), Queer as Folk (I have no idea why I put this on my list, I think only because I like the box), Rescue Me (It got good ratings, I dunno), Brothers and Sisters (a friend who is a girl who used to be like a girlfriend told me this was good), The 4400 (I saw the commercial for it once and it looked like it could either be interesting, or horrible), Walker, Texas Ranger (No explaination needed), 30 Rock (Never seen it, heard it was good).
I kinda want some 90s campyness but could also go with a really awesome main Character (like House is)
Oh yeah, and I have ruled out Ugly Betty.
suggestions on what I haven't mentioned or opinions on what I have would be appreciated! What TV DVD Set should I invest my time and money in next?
I vote for The L Word.
You can see if you like it -- there's some recaps that I love here:

i think you'll love it!! :) :)What TV DVD Set should I invest my time and money in next?
I think if you start ER from the first season and continue watching each episode, it will draw you in. It is such a fast paced show that it will go by in no time.
I would also suggest watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed from the beginning.
If you like one season hits, then check out Wonderfalls and Firefly. They were both excellent shows.

FRIENDS duh it the best show and it both 90 and 200ish lol and then there dawson creek which is good but you said something about the L word that a good show but season 6th which is the one that airing soon is the last season
Since you liked Lois and Clark, you might find Smallville interesting. The later seasons are awful, but the first few are good. Heroes is another similar show that you might like.
If you like action, try Lost, Prison Break or Alias.
Farscape is an interesting sci-fi show. So is Battlestar Galactica (the new one), if you can handle the darkness. The Dead Zone was decent, although it was canceled abruptly.
If you never tried it, check out Buffy the Vampire Slayer (skip seasons 6 and 7) as well as Angel, Supernatural and Reaper.
Northern Exposure is a great older show. So is Tour of Duty.
If you like hard-edged serialized dramas, try Homicide: Life on the Streets, The Wire, The Shield, The Sopranos or Oz.
