Is it legal to draw Disney princesses and sell them as painting?

My daughter paints on canvas, and she would like to trace the Disney princesses , paint them and sell . I was wondering if this is legal or she is not allowed even if she alter somehow the painting ,like different colors or changing the clothing.

No. Disney is a very aggressive protector of their properties, the practically shut down a day care center in Southern California because the had a painting of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfes on their wall.



Of course, for Disney to succeed in prosecuting you for infringing on their copyrights, they have to find you, then determine that you used their artwork in developing your paintings.



The first part is a matter of exposure. If you paint a painting for your neighbor's kid and the painting goes from your studio to the wall of her room, odds are Disney will never see it and wouldn't care if they did. If, on the other hand, you make a bunch of paintings and put them into an online gallery -- and particularly if you reference Disney or the name of their characters in your description of them, you'll probably get a letter to cease and desist right away.



The second part is a matter of your skill or orientation as a painter. Basically, if you do an abstract interpretation or you're just not very good at painting what you see, Disney (and everyone else) might have a hard time connecting your work to the Disney character art. I dont think so cus in my art class we had to paint a comic or chartoon and wer having an art show were some people might buy some of the art
